FireSmart

What are fire smart practices ?

A firesmart environment is a meticulously planned and maintained outdoor space designed to reduce the vulnerability of a property to wildfires. This approach, inspired by the FireSmart program in Canada, involves creating a defensible zone around structures and implementing strategies to minimise the potential spread of wildfires. Firesmart approach prioritizes safety and property protection while maintaining the natural beauty of the landscape.

    Creating a fire-resilient environment

    • Canopy lifting to create a two-meter clearance from the ground
    • Remove any dead tree standing on the property
    • Clearance pruning away from the house ( branches, hedges, shrubs)
    • Space trees so that the crown of individual trees are 3-6 meters apart
    • Remove or reduce the number of evergreen trees in the area. Evergreen
such as pine and spruce are much more combustible than deciduous trees.

The best protection against loss, damage
or injury due to wildfire is prevention.
